A number of Jesuits prior to Baraga served at Mackinac Island including Claude Dablon, S.J., Jacques Marquette, Louis Hennepin and more. In 1831 - 1832 at the same time Father Baraga was working at Beaver Island and Arbre Crochet, Father Baraga also frequented this location often. Mackinac Island was the main location of the fur trade post and the main stopping point for anyone who were traveling through the great lakes as it was situated close to Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
